New book on the Lisbon Treaty: 'New name - same content' - Jens-Peter Bonde - [Free PDF] [PDF]

The EC and EU Treaties, showing the changes proposed by the Treaty of Lisbon [Free PDF]

EUReform is pleased to announce its public launch.

EUReform is an enthusiastic supporter of the EU, but is opposed to the 'incomprehensible' Lisbon Treaty.

"The aim of the Constitutional Treaty was to be more readable; the aim of this treaty is to be unreadable ... The Constitution aimed to be clear, whereas this treaty had to be unclear. It is a success." - Karel de Gucht, Belgian Foreign Minister, Flandreinfo, 23 June 2007

EUReform's immediate demands.

1. Clear printed text needed.

EUReform, on behalf of all Irish voters, calls for, the immediate production by the Government of a consolidated printed text of the EC and EU treaties (which together amount to an EU Constitution), clearly showing the 356 changes proposed by the Lisbon Treaty, i.e.,

a) The clauses proposed to be deleted by Lisbon, and

b) The clauses proposed to be added by Lisbon.

Irish voters need this information, shown in its correct context.

They should not be denied this simple request.

UPDATE ... [March 28]

EUReform welcomes the production of a digital version of this text.

However, the document HAS NOT BEEN PRODUCED BY THE GOVERNMENT but by an independent body, the IIEA.

Although the IIEA has generously made the digital version freely available to download,

it is understood that there will be a charge for the printed version, which has still to be released.

The Government should, at the very least, make a printed version freely available to voters,

as was done, in France, on the occassion of that country's referendum on the proposed official EU Constitution.

2. Referendum Commission urgently needed.

The good functioning of the Referendum Commission is vital to Ireland being seen to have a fair and democratic referendum process.

The Referendum Commission is the body provided for in the 1998 Referendum Act with the function of informing citizens what a referendum is about and encouraging the maximum turnout of voters.

EUReform therefore calls for the immediate appointment of the Referendum Commission.

UPDATE ... [March 6]

The Referendum Commission has been established and will be chaired by Justice Iarfhlaith O'Neill

3. EU Reform calls for the Lisbon Treaty to be rejected.
